A Guide to Manicures

If you’re looking for a bit of pampering, then it’s worth heading to a spa and checking out the treatment options available for something truly revitalising. You could go for the usual reflexology, full-body massage or facial, but with the constant sanitising, your nails are probably looking like they need a bit of attention! If this is the case, then you can opt for a manicure.

Here’s everything you need to know about manicures

Where can you go for a manicure?

There are lots of places that offer you manicures, and it really just depends on your budget and preferences. You can get manicures done at:

·         Spas and salons – These will allow for complete relaxation with a number of professionals able to offer you a range of manicure options, and even a combination with other spa treatments.

·         Nail salons – These focus primarily on nails and, while there won’t be as much pampering as a spa, there might be more options in terms of nail art.

·         Shopping centres – These generally allow for walk ins and tend to work at a faster pace.

·         Resorts and casinos – If you’re on vacation, then you’re likely to find a nail salon or spa at any vacation resort or nearby casino. These are great for first-timers as they don’t rely on repeat customers.

What's included in a manicure?

If you’re a first-timer, then here’s a quick overview of what you can expect when you step into that spa for your manicure.

 -          Step 1

The technician will remove any existing nail polish, after which your nails will be shaped and filed depending on your preference. It’s often best to go with a natural shape if you haven’t had this done before.

-          Step 2

The nail technician will apply a cuticle softener and push your cuticles down. Alternatively, the technician might soak your hands in a bowl of warm water with scented oil.

-          Step 3

Most nail salons and spas will even give you a relaxing hand massage, including some reflexology techniques to hit all your pressure points.

-          Step 4

Once the preparation is done, the technician will ask you what nail colour you’d like to apply. A French manicure is a more natural look with a line of colour at the tips, otherwise you can choose a particular colour that you’ll have to wear for a while.

-          Step 5

The technician will likely apply a base coat, two colour coats, and a final glossy application to seal and protect the manicure. Your hands will then be placed under a UV light to dry and harden the polish.

What are the types of manicures?

You can opt to go for a straight forward manicure where a colour is applied or French manicure done, however nail technology has drastically evolved and there are several options available to you.  Check out our top 10 manicure trends.

-          Nail art

A skilled technician will be able to customise nail art for your manicure, including subtle dots and stripes through to quite intricate artwork. You’ll likely be given a selection of artwork to choose from.

-          Gel manicures

Instead of using nail polish, you can opt for a gel manicure that does cost a bit more, but will also last a lot longer. Most salons will also over gel touch-ups at a reduced rate, and you might need to return to remove the gel.

-          Paraffin manicure

This is a warm, therapeutic treatment that is aimed at both hydrating the skin and soothing inflamed joints. The paraffin used during the procedure locks in the moisture, ideal for those dry, cracked hands after a year of constant sanitising! You dip your hands into melted paraffin wax that opens the pores and increases circulation.

-          Spa manicure

Unlike a traditional manicure, the spa manicure will be a much longer, more relaxing service. It will often involve an aromatic rub, hydrating mask, hot towel wrap or hot stone massage.

-          Express manicure

If you’re in a rush, then the express manicure is for you. It includes the filing, shaping, buffing and nail painting but none of the additional services.

How much is a manicure?

The type of manicure you choose and where you go will obviously determine the of your manicure, but for a rough guideline, here’s the cost of a manicure:

·         Classic manicure: R220 to R250

·         Express manicure: R120 to R150

·         Spa manicure: R240 to R300
