Spray Tan Overview

Spray tans are a popular cosmetic treatment, but many are still misinformed about the results of modern spray tans, largely because of the poor quality of spray tans from a few decades back. Rather than the unnatural orange, blotchy result of years gone by, spray tans are actually much more subtle and sophisticated – provided they’re performed by an experienced technician in a reputable spa.

Everything you need to know about getting a spray tan

Here’s what you need to know about the spray tan procedure.

What's included in a spray tan?

If you’re looking for a superior spray tan, as offered by Evolve Day Spa, you’ll enjoy a professional spray tan that is formulated with a clean blend of antioxidant-rich botanicals, hydrating natural oils and skin-loving ingredients. The product should be odourless, free of parabens, contain 100% natural DHA (dihydroxyacetone) colour additive, and vegan friendly. You can choose from a variety of shades, and the actual spray tan package can also include exfoliation of dead skin cells prior to the procedure.

How much is a spray tan?

The cost of the spray tan will vary from place to place, but to give you a general idea:

·         Once-off spray tan: R350 – R400

·         Spray tan with exfoliation: R550 – R600

·         3-session spray tan: R1000 – R1200

·         3-session spray tan with exfoliation: R1500 – R1800

How long does a spray tan last?

The length of time the spray tan will last on your skin is impacted by a number of factors, including your own skin type, as well as pre- and post-skincare treatments. But another major determinant is the darkness of the spray tan itself. This is because of the active ingredient, DHA, which determines how long the colour will hold.

·         Lighter shade spray tans last around five days.

·         Medium shade spray tans last seven to eight days.

·         Darker shade spray tans last up to 10 days.

What to do before a spray tan

When booking your spray tan appointment with a spa, the technician should provide you with some guidance on what to do before the spray tan. However, to give you an idea of what you can expect, here are some pre-tan tips.

-          Exfoliation

Make sure to book your appointment a few days in advance, as this gives you time for exfoliation. It’s best to start exfoliating three days before your spray tan, using scrubs, loofahs or dry brushing. This removes the dead skin cells which can cause streaking, as well as ensuring the tan lasts that much longer.

 -          Avoid certain products

When exfoliating, it’s important not to use chemical exfoliants with retinol or glycolic acid as they will exfoliate the spray tan as well. Other products to avoid are anything oil-based, as these create a barrier over the skin that can prevent the spray tan being absorbed into the skin.

-          No waxing

If you do wax, plan to do so a few days before the spray tan appointment, rather than just before or after. Waxing within 24 hours of a spray tan will result in an uneven tint because of the opening of your pores.

-          Shower ahead of time

If possible, shower about eight hours before your spray tan appointment so that your skin can achieve the ultimate pH balance before the tan is applied.

-          Remove makeup and deodorant

The best option is not to wear any makeup ahead of time, but if you must, then take wipes to remove your makeup and deodorant just ahead of the spray tan. This will provide a more even spray tan and ensure more absorption into the skin.

-          Loose-fitting clothing

To avoid any streaking or tan lines, don’t wear tight-fitting clothes, underwear or shoes after the appointment. Rather wear loose-fitting items that prevent friction.

What are the benefits of a spray tan?

There are lots of reasons for choosing to go with spray tanning rather than a sunbed or tanning in the natural sunlight. Whether you have a big function to attend and don’t have the time, or you’re simply in the mood for a tan, then here’s a look at some of the benefits of going this route.

-          Time saving

As mentioned, a spray tan is something that can be done immediately without the need for lying in the sun or in a sunbed for hours. It takes about 20 minutes for the results to start showing and you can enjoy the benefits!

-          Shade options

When you consult with your spa technician, you can discuss exactly what shade of spray tan you’d like to achieve. This is not necessarily the case with purchased tanning products or sunbathing.

-          Streak-free bronzing

Because the spray tanning is done by a professional, you’re benefitting from incredibly natural-looking, streak-free bronzing that isn’t sticky and messy.

-          No UV (ultraviolet) exposure

Possibly the most important benefit of spray tanning is the fact that you’re getting the look of being sun-kissed, without the harmful exposure to ultraviolet. This means you’re lowering your risk of skin cancer and long-term skin damage.

-          Confidence boosting

At the end of the day, a spray tan is about you – it makes you look and feel good about yourself! In these stressful times, it’s important to do things that make you feel good about you.

Sunbeds vs Spray Tan

For those who don’t want to compromise on health and would like reduce premature ageing a spray tan is the best option and can give you a gorgeous bronzed body instantly without the harmful after effects.
