Different types of massages
The health benefits of massages are well documented and, in times of high stress, they are the perfect solution to unwind and relax. The biggest decision, really, is which massage is best for your particular needs. To help you choose, here is a breakdown of the various massages offered at spas around the country.
8 types of massages and which one is right for you
1. Swedish massage
When people refer to a massage in general, it’s commonly the Swedish massage that is being referenced. The technique used releases muscle tension and is somewhat gentler than a deep tissue massage.
2. Hot stone massage
This involves placing warm stones strategically over the body while the therapist also uses the stones to massage your body. It’s a relaxing but invigorating massage that is great for tension release.
3. Deep tissue massage
The therapist applies deep pressure to trouble points on the body. It can be quite a rigorous massage as pressure is placed on knotted muscles, often leaving the individual feeling quite sore afterwards.
4. Trigger point massage
Similar to deep tissue massage, trigger point massage focuses on specific areas of the body, rather than massaging the whole body. The muscle is coaxed using deep pressure, bringing about relaxation.
5. Shiatsu massage
This massage – translated as ‘finger pressure’ - combines gentle stretches and finger pressure to work on pressure points, fixing any energy imbalances within the body.
6. Thai massage
This is another form of rigorous massage although in a Thai massage, the body is manipulated into yoga stretches. The therapist will use hands, knees, legs and feet to stretch the body and apply pressure to various points.
7. Sports’ massage
This massage combines elements of Swedish, shiatsu and other massage techniques to improve blood and lymphatic fluid circulation as well as stretching muscle tissue and breaking down scar tissue. Athletes use this for preparing for performance, as well as preventing and treating injury.
8. Reflexology
Also known as zone therapy, reflexology involves the application of pressure to points on the feet to relieve ailments in other parts of the body.

What are you looking for in a massage?
Now that you have the basic rundown of the massage types offered, here’s a look at which massages are suited to which ailments or needs:
- Minor illness
Headaches and general malaise can often be assisted by reflexology which targets the particular points which correspond with various organs.
- Muscle tension
For chronic muscle tension, a deep tissue massage is a great option. It is believed to lower blood pressure, and release oxytocin and serotonin for enhanced mood. Another great tension release can be achieved through a head massage.
- Relaxation
If you’re just looking for some time out and a chance to be revitalised then a Swedish or shiatsu massage is ideal, although hot stone massages are fantastic as they use warmth to work any tired muscles.
- Pain relief
For more chronic pain relief, then a sports’ massage is probably the best option. Alternatively, a trigger point or sports’ massage will target specific areas of chronic pain.
